2013 seems to be the year of the cronut...we mean donut. It’s very fitting then that the first Friday in June is National Donut Day. Whether you spell it donut or doughnut, there’s no denying this delicious pastry.
Donuts have been in the news a lot lately. The aforementioned cronut has been taking New York City by storm. The croissant-donut hybrid was formed in mid-May by Dominique Ansel at his eponymous bakery in SoHo. A cronut is a donut made from croissant dough. If you’re kicking yourself for not thinking of that first, consider this: croissant batter is very difficult to fry and there’s a very good reason that cronuts haven’t been gracing pastry cases for years already.
Today is also the national debut of Dunkin’ Donuts glazed donut breakfast sandwich. A glazed donut sandwiches eggs and bacon, perfect for those who can’t decide between a sweet and savory breakfast.
If you’re looking for something a little more traditional, Dunkin’ Donuts, Krispy Kreme and other donut stores and chains are offering freebies and deals in honor of the delicious day.
Oh, and if you’re wondering why we celebrate National Donut Day to begin with, you can thank the Salvation Army. They’re the ones who came up with Donut Day back in 1938 to raise funds and celebrate “donut lassies” — the female Salvation Army volunteers who provided home-cooked meals, supplies and — what else — donuts to soldiers fighting on the front lines.
