T.D. Jakes is a man of God, plain and simple. In September 2001, Time magazine asked “Is This Man the Next Billy Graham?” Probably not, but it’s clear he’s the first T.D. Jakes. He is founder and senior pastor of The Potter’s House in Dallas, where he ministers to a congregation whose members number more than 30,000. His mastery in interpreting and sharing the biblical text enables him to reveal mysteries in the Bible in a way that very few others can.

Because he is familiar with life at the bottom as well as at the top—and much that is in between—his messages are both exciting and impactful, clearly demonstrating how God is working in our lives.

In my humble opinion, Jakes is a living example of what God wants to do in each of our lives, if we only believe in the power and promises of God. Aside from the above, Jakes is a prolific author of more than 30 books, a songwriter, playwright and a producer of major motion pictures.

I was among several reporters who were able to sit down with Jakes during his recent visit to Los Angeles, to get firsthand knowledge of his projects and some of his future plans. Below are just a few of the highlights from our discussion:

During MegaFest, Aug. 29-31, Jakes will present the largest U.S. Inspirational Festival in America. Some of the biggest names in entertainment and the ministry will be on hand to empower, entertain, and inspire attendees of all ages from all over the world. There will be a variety of activities for every member of the family and for both Christians and non-Christians alike.

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey will be taping all-new episodes of her popular “Lifeclass,” while Joel and Victoria Osteen, Bishop I.V. Hilliard, Dr. Jasmin Sculark, Marvin Sapp and many more will be on hand delivering messages or heading special panels.

The event also includes ManPower for men and Woman Thou Art Loosed for women. The three days will also incIude MegaYouth, featuring youth-focused entertainers and speakers, and MegaKidz for the youngsters.

MegaFest will tackle a variety of subjects that impact the nation today. From a discussion on fatherlessness, since more than 43 percent of American children live in a fatherless homes, to a discussion on autism, which heavily impacts African Americans the event will inform and educate.

MegaFest will also debut the International Faith and Family Film Festival, which will run all three days. There will be panel discussions featuring some of Hollywood’s most prominent faith and family filmmakers.

Films such as “Black Nativity” starring Angela Bassett, Tyrese, Forest Whitaker and Jennifer Hudson will be screened. Also “Winnie” the story of Winnie Mandela, starring Jennifer Hudson, and Terrence Howard will be screened.

But I’m just scratching the surface of this mega event. Registration for MegaFest is open now. For more information, or to register, visit www.mega-fest.com.

Currently in production in Atlanta is the “T.D. Jakes Presents: Mind, Body and Soul” talk show, which is coming to BET. This production is not a religiously based show, but it promises to be one of the most comprehensive, spirit-filled talk shows to date. It will cover a wide range of topics affecting our community, including health, wellness, finance and relationships.

And Jakes will delve into the hearts and minds of some of the movers and shakers of this generation. Actor/Rapper LL Cool J, Gospel great Marvin Sapp and Sony Pictures Executive DeVon Franklin will be kicking off the series. Jakes says he wants to get into their minds and find out what made them do what they accomplished regardless of the odds against them. The series is produced and hosted by T.D. Jakes. “T.D. Jakes Presents Mind, Body & Soul” in September on BET.
