The Los Angeles Free South Africa Movement is organizing vigils and other gatherings to celebrate the life, legacy and values of Nelson Mandela in cooperation with the South African government and the African National Congress. Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison before being released and eventually becoming the president of South Africa, is hospitalized in critical condition.
Twenty-three years ago the Nelson Mandela Reception Committee, chaired by then-Assemblywoman Maxine Waters, welcomed Mandela, who then headed the African National Congress, to Los Angeles.
