Urban Scholar Athletes Inc. was founded by Imhotep and Alexis Coleman, parents of public school children who believed that if it takes a village (neighborhood) to raise children, then it takes children to raise a village. Understanding the need for youth leadership in order to make changes in urban “villages” throughout Los Angeles, Imhotep and Alexis created an enrichment program that focuses on developing well-rounded, fully engaged students through accelerated academics, physical fitness/athletics; and service learning opportunities.

“Ultimately, our organization is committed to developing scholarly students who are equally committed to enriching their mind, developing their bodies, and enhancing their spirits in order to become leaders in and outside the classroom–the difference makers in surrounding communities,” said Imhotep.

Essentially, through the organization’s program, students [known as urban scholars], will over time expand their minds through academic enrichment, enhance their bodies through physical activity and education, and develop the spirit through community service initiatives.

Urban Scholar Athletes Inc. believes that when young people are exposed to community service opportunities they develop the necessary skills and traits it takes to become transformative leaders who become motivated and actively engaged in school, and learn to take responsibility for the well-being of their surrounding communities.

“Whether it’s a few hours or a couple of days out of the year, our goal is to help urban youth participate in service opportunities that make a difference in the lives of others and the environment,” said Imhotep. “Ultimately, through these experiences, we believe that desirable places to live, work, and play will be created and maintained.”

The Urban Scholar Saturday Enrichment Academy is targets students currently in first to sixth grade. Every Saturday, from 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m., experienced instructors will help students explore specialized areas of science, reading and math in fun and engaging ways.

The winter term of the academy will launch on Saturday, Jan. 19 at Darby Park Recreational Center, 3400 Arbor Vitae, Inglewood, and will run through Saturday, March 16, 2013.

In addition to the academy’s founding principles, program components will include:

  • * Scholar Buck Incentive Program: Throughout the program, scholars will have the opportunity to earn “scholar bucks” for perfect attendance, time management, report cards, classroom behavior, extension activities, community service, and athletic sports participation. At the end of the term, students will be able to redeem their “scholar bucks” for organizational apparel, school supplies, gift cards and sports equipment.
  • * Urban Scholar gift bags: Every week, scholars will receive a gift bag full of treats, free books, and a Scholastic Weekly Reader Magazine–a magazine full of colorful photos and fun articles that brings news to life.
  • * Field trips and community service: Additionally, to extend their learning outside the classroom, students will participate in an enrichment field trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific and a service opportunity, within the Los Angeles area, to make a difference in the lives of others.

“Our organization is committed to developing an appreciation for lifelong learning,” said Imhotep. “Whet-her it’s math, reading, or science, we’re here to assist parents in advancing the performance of their children.”

Program registration is $40, which includes the first session, a T-shirt, and Scholastic Weekly Reader magazine subscription. Weekly classes are $20 per week; sibling discounts are available.
