HAWTHORNE, Calif. — The mother of a 14-month-old Hawthorne boy who died at a hospital was arrested today along with her boyfriend in connection with the child’s death.
The boy was brought to Centinela Freeman Regional Medical Center in Inglewood by ambulance around 11:15 p.m. Sunday night. He was not breathing when he arrived, and he was pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m., according to the Sheriff’s Department.
The boy’s mother, 42-year-old Sandra Cartegena, was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment, while her 44-year-old boyfriend, Julio Mejia, was arrested on suspicion of murder, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
Cartegena’s two other sons, aged 9 and 14, were taken into protective custody, sheriff’s officials said.
Details of how the child died were not immediately released.
