Turner Construction will hold a prequalification information session for people looking to subcontract on the $650 million Wilshire Grand Hotel Project. The meeting will be held Aug. 13 from 4-6 p.m., at the Los Angeles Convention Center in West Hall, Room 502, 1201 S. Figueroa St., Los Angeles. The deadline to register is today at 5 p.m.

The Wilshire Grand project is being constructed on the site of the old hotel located as Wilshire Boulevard and Figueroa Street. It will consist of a 900-room hotel, 400,000 square feet of class A office space, retail outlets and dining amenities. The new hotel will be 73 stories tall and will be the first structure in the city constructed without a flat roof (to accommodate helicopters) since City Hall was built.
The information session is designed to familiarize minority, women and small business subcontractors with the project, and is part of Turner’s effort to reach a goal of 20 percent utilization of these firms. The subcontracting is valued at about $120 million.
At the information session, many of the large trade contractors will be on hand looking for smaller firms they can partner with. Additionally, information will be available for smaller firms interested in partnering with one another.
In addition to recruiting diverse subcontractors, the project has also signed a project labor agreement with the Los Angeles/Orange Counties Building and Construction Trades Council to focus on hiring local minority and disadvantaged workers. A project labor agreement worked out with Turner is designed to make sure that minorities, women and disadvantaged workers from the apprentice to journeyman level have an opportunity to obtain work.
The meeting on Aug. 13 is for business owners only. People interested in securing a job on the project should check with your local Worksource center or one of the labor unions.
