Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority will hold its 61st western regional conference Friday, April 19, to Sunday, April 21, under the theme “Uniting Communities for Growth, Partnerships and Service.” The event will be held at the Torrance Marriott South Bay Hotel at 3635 Fashion Way in Torrance.

The community is invited to attend the free public meeting on Friday, April 19, 7:30 – 9 p.m., which will highlight the sorority’s activities around the world.

Through Sigma Gamma Rho’s campaign with USA Swimming, 2004 Olympic silver medalist Maritza McClendon and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Jessica Hardy will speak to promote swim safety, especially for African American youth who have higher rates of drowning. McClendon was the first African American woman to place on a U.S. Olympic Swim Team. Youth are highly encouraged to attend.

McClendon and Hardy will sign autographs following the public meeting.

Sigma Gamma Rho member Lana “MC Lyte” Moorer will share inspirational words and discuss her book.

Health is one area the sorority targets. On Saturday, April 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. the public is also invited to attend the health fair and take advantage of the free information provided to better their health.

Gamma Tau Sigma, Long Beach Alumnae Chapter, is the host chapter.
