The sheriff’s department identified three men who were arrested for an attempted murder on a peace officer in the wounding of a sheriff’s deputy in the Firestone area.

They were identified as Michael Cones, 36, and Joe Childs and Brendan Caveness, both 24. Each was held in lieu of $1 million bail, and their booking photos were withheld pending further investigation, according to a department statement.

The department said deputies assigned to an Operation Safe Streets program tried to detain a group of five to 10 males on 81st Street near Parmalee Avenue, and all of them ran. Three or four of those suspects fired at deputies, and deputies shot back.

The deputy was believed to have been the only person wounded.

Other people were arrested for other charges in connection to the Friday shooting, but these three suspects who were arrested are the “primaries,” deputies said. A precise number of the arrested and their charges were not immediately known, said a deputy with the sheriff’s headquarters bureau.

The name of the wounded deputy remains unreleased. On Saturday, Sheriff Lee Baca said the name was withheld because he has a frail mother and wanted to tell her that himself.

The deputy, a 15-year department veteran assigned to the Operation Safe Streets anti-gang detail, was wounded in the abdomen and underwent surgery, according deputies with the bureau. He was reported to have stable vital signs following surgery Saturday.
