Commercial fire breaks out in Compton

6/4/2012, 8:23 a.m.

COMPTON, Calif.--A two-alarm blaze roared through a commercial building in Compton last night, quickly forcing firefighters to go into defensive mode to protect surrounding structures, a Downey dispatcher said.

The fire was reported at 9:26 p.m. at an apparently vacant building in the 500 block of East Rosecrans Avenue, said a dispatcher for the city of Downey, which handles calls for the Compton Fire Department.

The first arriving Compton unit called for a second alarm response and reinforcements arrived from Downey and Vernon, the Downey dispatcher said.

A witness at the scene noted there were units from Santa Fe Springs and Los Angeles County as well. The dispatcher said there were six to seven engines and two aerial trucks, and other units moved up to fill the stations of the trucks fighting the fire.

The blaze was declared knocked down at 11:05 p.m., the dispatcher said.

No injuries were immediately reported.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
