LOS ANGELES, Calif.–A homeless man was fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting on a South Los Angeles street, and the suspect remained at large today, a police sergeant said.

The victim was identified as Damian Lerma, 31, said Coroner’s Investigator Dana Bee.

Bee said Lerma, a transient, had no place of residence.

The shooting took place at about 8 p.m. Saturday at 71st St. and Brynhurst Avenue, in the Hyde Park area of South Los Angeles, said Sgt. Donnie Ellison of the Los Angeles Police Department 77th Street Station.

“A man is standing out front, a car drives up, they exchange words and he’s shot multiple times,” Ellison said. The man, between ages 30 and 35, was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses told police the suspect’s car was black, Ellison said. There was no description of the shooter.
