LOS ANGELES - The California Highway Patrol reported no traffic fatalities in Los Angeles County during the Labor Day weekend, compared with three for the same weekend last year.
The death of an 88-year-old Valencia man, whose car went off the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway transition road to the Foothill (210) Freeway in Sylmar at 8:57 a.m. Saturday, was listed as a traffic death in CHP "provisional'' figures, but was not classified as a traffic death in the "final'' figures released today, according to the CHP.
Statewide, the CHP reported a total of 21 traffic-related deaths between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Monday. Last year, during the same reporting period, the CHP reported a dozen traffic deaths statewide.
CHP officers arrested 305 motorists on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs in Los Angeles County during this weekend.
Last year, during the same time period, CHP officers arrested 228 motorists countywide for DUI offenses.
Statewide, during this weekend, the CHP reported 1,521 DUI arrests, compared to 1,417 last year.
The CHP holiday statistics include deaths on any road in the state, but only those drunken driving arrests made by CHP officers on freeways or in unincorporated areas.
