BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.–Film students can begin submitting their work to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today for consideration for the 2011 Student Academy Awards competition.
Gold, silver and bronze medals, along with cash prizes, are awarded in categories of alternative, animation, narrative and documentary. The application deadline is April 1.
The competition is open to full-time college and university students who produce films as part of their school curriculum.
The Academy also accepts foreign student films, but only from students whose schools are members of the international film organization known as CILECT. The deadline for foreign film submissions is March 25. The Academy traditionally presented only one foreign film award, but this year, up to three foreign films will be honored.

The 38th annual Student Academy Awards will be presented June 11 at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
According to the Academy, Student Academy Award winners have gone on to earn 40 Oscar nominations and won or shared seven awards–including former winner Pete Docter, who won an Oscar earlier this year for the animated feature film “Up.”
