Male Emphasis Day

The Second Baptist Church of Los Angeles will celebrate Male Emphasis Day on Sunday, July 20, 2008 at two services, 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. in their temporary location, “The Living Room,” 400 W. Florence Ave., Inglewood, CA. The public is invited to join the men of the church who will conduct both morning worship services that include the all male chorus who will minister through music.
Under the theme “Facing Our Future with Renewed Faith,” Second Baptist continues its century long tradition of bringing prominent preachers to its pulpit, with Dr. Cleophus J. LaRue, The Francis Landey Patton Associate Professor of Homiletics at Princeton (NJ) Theological Seminary. His highly acclaimed book The Heart of Black Preaching was published in 2000. LaRue specializes in the theory and method of African American preaching and worship. An ordained minister in the National Baptist Convention of America, LaRue is the former pastor of two churches in Texas as well as the former interim pastor of churches in Harlem and Jamaica Queens, New York. LaRue, a member of the Academy of Homiletics, received his B.A. and M.A at Baylor University and his M.Div and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton Seminary.
Second Baptist Church of Los Angeles, the oldest African American Baptist Church in the city will continue to hold its Sunday morning worship services in “The Living Room” while its church facility is being restored. The church anticipates relocating to its home sanctuary at 2412 Griffith Ave., Los Angeles, in the fall of 2008.
