On Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, the LA. County Democratic Party awarded Dr. Giovanna Brasfield and Julian Rogers the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Democrat of the Year Award for the 52nd Assembly District (AD).

Keeping the sandy shores and water clean

Los Angeles is more than just star sightings and sunshine–it’s our home. Despite the affection most Angelenos and tourists harbor for the beach, the sandy shores remain a dumping ground for discarded soda cans, wrappers, cigarette butts, Styrofoam plates–you name it, you’ve probably spread your towel over it.

Charges placed on extra bins for residents

Los Angeles City Bureau of Sanitation officials said that the thousands of Los Angeles residents who were mistakenly not charged for the extra-large capacity garbage cans, will be assessed a fee on their Department of Water and Power bill in the next month.

Free school supplies, health screenings, petting zoo, pony rides

 Food, entertainment, clowns, pony rides, a petting zoo, dental and visual screenings, vendors, a resource fair, door prizes, dance contests, arts and crafts, games and more, as well as backpacks and school supplies will all be provided free from Special Needs Network, Inc. (SNN) when it hosts it’s 3rd Annual Back-to-School “Community Connections: Inclusion Event” from 2 - 6 p.m., Sunday Aug.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
