Leadership’s right to call a strike remains

 Los Angeles, CA -- Despite a tentative agreement announced yesterday, with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the 48,000 members of United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) will keep in place a decision to hold a vote March 20-25 on whether to give their union leadership the right to call a strike against the District.

UTLA said the result of the vote will be available by the end of the day on March 26.

Black pilot group receives donation

 Los Angeles, CA -- The University of Phoenix donated $20,000 to the Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Foundation, and according its president, Jerry T. Hodges, the Los Angeles-based non-profit will use the money to boost the number of students to whom it provides scholarships.

Currently the organization awards $1,500 to 41 students and one $20,000 Pratt and Whitney scholarship to a young person who “instills the ideals, leadership and commitment exemplified by the Tuskegee Airmen.

Gun violence claiming the lives of young Black males

 Los Angeles, CA -- Maurio Proctor, 22, and two friends were standing on Proctor’s grandmother’s porch in the Jordan Downs housing projects in Watts when an unidentified car spotted the trio and made a sharp U-turn.

“They drove up to my son and his friends and fired 17 rounds,” said Reggie Sims, Proctor’s father, who said the shooting occurred on Jan. 28, 2008. “Three of (the) bullets hit my son. One struck him behind the right ear, one on the right arm and another on his shoulder and in his thigh. He died instantly.”

Three dead; suspects sought

Citizens of Monrovia are still stunned after a rash of gang-related shootings shattered the tranquil community in the past several weeks which have left three dead and one paralyzed.

Police authorities are blaming the violence on warring Latino and African American gangs.

Monrovia resident Sanders “Pete” Rollins, a 64-year-old black man, was gunned down by unknown assailants in his front yard on Jan. 13. Sixteen-year-old Samantha Salas, a sophomore at Alhambra High School, was shot eight times on her way to a neighborhood store.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
