Conrad Murray set for April 5 court date

Dr. Conrad Murray, the physician who has been under investigation for his treatment of pop singer Michael Jackson, has now been formally charged with involuntary manslaughter in the case, and returns April 5 for a hearing at the Los Angeles Airport court.
At that time, Dr. Murray’s case is expected to be transferred to the downtown Los Angeles court on West Temple Street to the long-cause court. Unless special permission is granted, the cardiologist must be at every court session.

Documentary tells of survivors’ fight for justice

A screening of “Before They Die,” a documentary chronicling the Tulsa Race Riot will be held Feb., 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Crozier Middle School Auditorium, 161 N. Grevilla Ave., Inglewood.
A reception and discussion accompany the film.

She was 98 years old

Mable Ephriam, mother to popular television justice, Mablean Ephriam, died at her home recently. She was 98 years old.
Ephriam, described by many as a caring and generous woman, was born Sept. 29, 1911 to Laura Rawls and Tom Strong of Crystal Springs, Mississippi. She relocated to Memphis, Tennessee at age 15, where she graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.
Mable met and wed Robert T. Ephriam in July of 1934, giving birth to their first child a year later; nine others would come in the years that followed. Three preceded her in death.

Local boys and girls club raises money for Haiti

Challengers Boys and Girls Club in South Los Angeles will hold a “Hoops 4 Haiti” fundraiser Feb. 26 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the club’s facility, 5029 S. Vermont Ave.
The event will pit the Challengers All-Start basketball team against the teachers of Inner City Education Foudation, and all proceeds will benefit Haitian earthquake survivors.
In addition to the game, Challengers is holding a series of fundraising events throughout Black History Month and 100% of the money raised will benefit Haiti.

Working to get others involved in educating young Black men

The Motivated Men of Dorsey High School is a nonprofit organization committed to community collaboration and social responsibility through its efforts to prepare the young men at Dorsey High School to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and life-long learners. As a collaborative of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and community members, the organization’s objective is to foster positive relationships with the young men in an effort to close the achievement gap, increase test scores, and lead them to a successful high school experience.
