Feds remind American families about tax credits

Recently, administration officials Jared Bernstein, chief economist to Vice President Joe Biden, Michael Mundaca, assistant secretary of the Treasury for Tax Policy, and Brian Deese of the National Economic Council, discussed ways American families can benefit from Recovery Act tax credits, as they file their 2009 tax return.
President Barack Obama has allotted $160 billion in Recovery Act tax credits that will primarily benefit working families and small businesses.

Jail cell versus the classroom

It brings me to tears sometimes thinking about how many naturally gifted Black men there are who could have been the next Ben Carson or the next Thurgood Marshall or even the next Barack Obama, but can’t because they are serving maximum sentences in prison.
In 2000, there were 791,600 Black men in prison compared to 603,032 in college. By contrast in 1980, there were 143,000 Black men in prison and 463,700 in college. This is an appalling statistic, and it makes me wonder how this happened.

Despite Obama, fashion industry still lacks diversity

In the dawn of a new day for American culture, we celebrate the opportunity of diversity and the promise it offers Blacks in America. We also wake up daily watching our Black President address the nation and often the world, and we are filled with hope and the possibility of a dream come true; a chance at equality. However, in the midst of this dream, there lies a harsh reality in the glamorous world of fashion--there is still a stunning lack of opportunity for models of color.
