Third annual Gospel Fest rocks Long Beach
Noted artists grace stage
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Sweet melodies of Gospel music wafted throughout the streets of downtown Long Beach courtesy of Antioch Church of Long Beach and the city of Long Beach, which hosted the third annual Gospel Fest and Downtown worship experience, Sunday.
Hosted by KJLH’s Aundrae Russell, Gospel Fest 2011 featured an artist lineup including Grammy-Award-nominated, Dove and Stellar Award-winning artists Kierra Sheard and Trin-i-tee 5:7; three-time Stellar Award winners James Fortune and Fiya, along with Mali Music, Myesha Chaney, Micah Stampley and a multitude of other singers and musicians.
There were also guest appearances from Abraham McDonald, winner of Oprah Winfrey’s first-ever Karaoke challenge; Eric J. Chambers, host of Jazzspel on the Word Network, featuring his artists, and many more.
Performances by Mali Music, Tanika Wyatt, Keisha Renee, and Voices of Destiny rocked the house as the audience sung along, waving their hands and enjoying the performances.
The Long Beach Gospel Fest is establishing itself as the region’s premiere gospel concert, and organizers are strong advocates of strategic community partnerships. The event offered a myriad of foods and goods, service vendors, children’s arts and crafts, and community information booths.
In addition to the music, concertgoers were moved by the spoken word of Pastor Sheridan McDaniel of Worship Center Community Church.
“Where else in the world can you experience gospel by the sea in a (concert) that brings together world renowned artists, families and the entire community?” asked Pastor Wayne Chaney, event producer. Radiating positivity and unity, the Gospel Fest brought love, peace, and happiness to the community through praise and worship.
R & B sensation and “Oprah” Show Karaoke winner Abraham McDonald will continue the spirit of giving when he holds the last performance of his “Home for the Holidays” concert series.
The Luther Vandross-style crooner will perform his sultry yuletide single “Giving You My Heart,” which is now available on iTunes, his ballad “Miracle” and other hits at Busby’s Mile High Club on Dec. 28 in Los Angeles.
LONG BEACH - First lady Michelle Obama was added today to the list of speakers who will attend The Women's Conference 2010 in Long Beach organized by California first lady Maria Shriver.
"I am honored to welcome first lady Michelle Obama back to The Women's Conference," Shriver said. "Mrs. Obama and I not only share a commitment to service, women, military families, community health and many other issues, but also share the role of wife and mother, of which she is a stunning example.''
We all know that Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey are BFFs, and if you’re like me, you’ve been waiting for his latest offerings that will air on OWN, Winfrey’s Network. First up, Perry’s first dramatic series, “The Have and Have Nots,” premiering May 28.
The show follows the complicated dynamics between the rich and powerful Cryer family and the hired help who work in their opulent Savannah, Ga., mansion.
This is a familiar story line, and Perry is going to have to bring it to keep viewers watching.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors today reestablished a $10,000 reward for information leading to whoever fatally shot a 26-year-old Long Beach resident and left him lying in the street.
Supervisor Don Knabe, who recommended reinstating the reward, which had expired, called the shooting “heinous.”
Lashown Fils was killed on Jan. 11, 2012, at 3:55 a.m. in the 200 block of West 14th Street.
LONG BEACH, Calif. — An ammonia leak at a cold storage facility in Long Beach today prompted authorities to close freeway offramps in the area for nearly five hours while crews worked to handle the problem.
The leak was reported at the Long Beach Cold Storage and Logistics facility at Anaheim Street and Daisy Avenue around 3:30 a.m. , the Long Beach Fire Department reported.
The facility is the same where a leak was discovered Feb. 2, said Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Matt Dobberpuhl.
