Gov signs Senator Price's SB 596 bill
Bill permits reformatting and consolidation of closely-related current notices required under the California Insurance Code
Sacramento, CA – SB 596, which permits reformatting and consolidation of closely-related current notices required under the California Insurance Code to permit reduction in mailings and paper usage was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown on Tuesday.
Authored by Senator Curren D. Price, Jr., the bill will streamline several consumer notices, thereby reducing customer confusion and providing easier access to relevant information.
“Each year, the insurance industry sends out tens--of--millions of disclosures in the form of paper,’ said Senator Price. “Some of these disclosures relate to the very same issue but are currently required to be sent in two separate mailings.”
SB 596 will make some of those disclosures in a way that requires fewer resources and save paper, while maintaining important consumer disclosures.
According to the Association of California Insurance Companies (ACIC), SB 596 will improve efficiency, reduce confusion by consumers, and save precious natural resources by consolidating disclosure notices into a single mailing SB 596 will strengthen consumer protections by requiring insurers to provide pertinent sections of the insurance law, on one page, clearly identifying prohibited unfair insurance practices in 10 point type. This reduction is consistent with many other consumer protection disclosures.
Additionally, this measure requires insurers selling homeowner's insurance to disclose to applicants, in the same document that offers earthquake coverage, all discounts or surcharges for homeowner's insurance and related earthquake insurance, rather than separate mailings so that the consumer clearly understands what discounts are being offered by the insurer.

Veteran politician Curren Price Jr. will face-off against first-time political candidate Ana Cubas on May 21 during the general election for the Los Angeles City Council 9th District seat.
Based on unofficial voting results from Tuesday, Price (27.22 percent) and Cubas (23.96 percent) were the top two vote-getters in a field of seven.
Cubas bested veteran politician Mike Davis (who collected 15.69 percent of ballots) as well as David Roberts, a longtime City Hall operative much like herself.
LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Outgoing City Councilman Bill Rosendahl’s chief deputy will be replacing his boss on the 15-member council, while a pair of Assembly members appeared to have narrowly earned enough votes to avoid a May runoff and win seats on the panel.
Rosendahl announced last year he was suffering from cancer and announced he would not run for a third term in the council’s 11th District. His chief deputy, Mike Bonin, easily outpaced three opponents to claim the seat.
Great Beginnings for Black Babies (GBBB) Executive Director Rae Jones has been selected one of the 2013 26th District SHeroes by Senator Curren D. Price Jr. and was honored at a February luncheon.
Serving since 2009 at the helm of GBBB, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the healthy development and growth of African American babies and their families, Jones was honored as one of the “extraordinary women who are committed to their professions and communities,” according to Sen. Price.

As they move closer to the March 5 election, candidates in the 9th Council District campaign continue to pound out their message to constituents. They did so before a crowd of some 400 people at a recent candidate’s forum.
At the same time, residents have let those running for this office know that they have some concerns and demands they want addressed.
