Five Californians win spot in Florida academy

Five California students—including three from the Los Angeles area—have been selected to attend the 2011 Disney’s Dreamers Academy, and beginning March 3 they will have the opportunity to go to Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla., and participate in series of a unique workshops on subjects including entertainment, entrepreneurship, the culinary arts and creative inspiration from Walt Disney Imagineering.

Ceremony recognizes his scientific contributions

California State University, Los Angeles, better known as Cal State L.A., will officially dedicate its courtyard area on Friday, Feb. 18, to a man who once served as a porter for the Southern Pacific Railway and went on to be the school’s emeritus professor of chemistry. 

The ceremony for Lloyd N. Ferguson will be held at 11:30 a.m.

The courtyard quad is located in between La Kretz Hall and Wing B of the Wallis Annenberg Integrated Sciences Complex on the East Los Angeles campus.

Awards based on need

It’s college application time, and for young people planning to go on to postsecondary education, some critical deadlines are fast approaching.

The most critical is the March 2 deadline to submit applications for the state administered Cal Grant programs. Cal Grants are available for low- and middle-income high school graduates, community college students and those interested in attending a career technical program.

Tie for 1st place

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Academic Decathlons wrapped up for both the Los Angeles county and city school districts with the Super Quiz event, which focused on geology.

Alhambra High School and Burbank High School tied for first place in the Super Quiz portion of the Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon at USC.

Both teams had 49 points out of a possible 60, according to preliminary results released by LACAD officials.
