Trade expo highlight literary industry

Publishers, authors, literary agents, retailers and anybody connected to the book industry will converge on Los Angeles May 30- June 1 to attend the giant BookExpo America, and those interested in finding about African American books can visit the African American Pavilion at the Expo.

“This is the largest book trade show in North America. About 80,000 people come every year,” explained Tony Rose, head of Amber Communications Inc., which for the last two years has coordinated and produced the African American pavilion

NAWBO honors the entrepreneurial spirit

The Los Angeles chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) hosts its 22nd annual Leadership and Legacy Awards luncheon Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, and several local women will receive honors.

The event pays tribute to top achievers among women leaders, who have established a legacy of entrepreneurial excellence and contributed to their community. At the luncheon, NAWBO will induct Mary Ann Mitchell into its hall of fame and honor Natalie Cole with its Rising Star Award.

Entrepreneur looks to harness efforts of many into one powerful force

 Los Angeles, CA -- Amabel Niba is about coalition building, and she uses that focus to help causes that are near and dear to her heart.

“There are already so many organizations doing good work . . . so instead of (developing) another nonprofit, I wanted to create a village effort and use whatever funds I raised to support another organization.”

Niba, publisher and editorial director of African Vibe magazine took the position of trying to become a unifying force based on what she saw happening in her native Cameroon.
