Charged with attempted murder

A man suspected of sexually assaulting a woman at a bus stop at Manchester and Normandie avenues was charged Wednesday with attempted murder and other charges, the District Attorney’s Office announced.

Allen Phillip Crews, 22, was arraigned at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center, Department 30. Prosecutors asked that bail be set at $1.56 million.

Crews is charged with one felony count each of attempted murder, assault with intent to commit a felony, sexual penetration by a foreign object and assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury.

Leader wants to integrate yacht racing

One man’s two-year attempt to integrate the upcoming 34th America’s Cup will now be heard in oral arguments before the Supreme Court of the State of New York on June 27, 2012. Charles M. Kithcart, executive director of African Diaspora Maritime (ADM), has filed suit against the Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC), current trustee of the America’s Cup.

Investigation still under way

An investigation is under way this week into the death of a 7-year-old boy found hanging from a tree in Lancaster.

Coroner’s officials identified the victim as Aaris M. Conway of Lancaster.

The death was discovered at 6:15 p.m. Friday in the 1000 block of Angela Court, said Lt. Mary Leef of the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau.

Charged with perjury for lying about finances

George Zimmerman’s wife, Shellie, was arrested Tuesday and charged with one count of perjury for allegedly lying under oath at his bond hearing about whether she and her husband had access to any money.

She posted $1,000 bond and was released.

At Zimmerman’s April 20 bond hearing, Shellie Zimmerman, 25, was asked whether the couple had any money.

Still no arrest made; funeral plans tentative

 Members of the community and the family of Angel Cortez, the 14-month-old boy who was the victim of a suspected gang-related shooting, came together Saturday to hold a car wash to raise money for the child’s funeral.

“The turnout was really good,” said Marisol, Angel’s godmother. “The community has been very supportive of our family and I can’t even describe how good it feels to have that support.”

City Council votes to improve Foreclosure Registry Ordinance

On the day before the Los Angeles City Council voted on a set of amendments to strengthen the city’s Foreclosure Registry Ordinance, community members and L.A. city sanitation workers delivered bags of trash from a vacant foreclosed home to a bank that’s one of L.A.’s largest holders of vacant foreclosed properties, Bank of New York Mellon.

Alabama
Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.
 

Arkansas
The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
