Mojave experiments with cell phone privileges for students who test well

Used to motivate improvement

Ninth-through 12th-grade students at Mojave Junior Senior High School who score well on their state standardized tests will be allowed to use their cell phones on campus at certain times.
 
This concession is part of an incentive program recently approved by the Mojave Unified School District board. Cell phone use by students on campus is currently forbidden.

The program was approved to be implemented on a trial basis for one semester on a 4-1 vote pending approval of a final version of the policy.

The festival wraps up on Sunday

Gap Band’s bass player Robert Wilson dies

Cause unknown

Bassist Robert Wilson, who founded the legendary American funk act the Gap Band with his brothers Charlie, and Ronnie, died Sunday in his Palmdale home. The cause of death is still unknown pending a full autopsy. Wilson was 53.
 
The Wilson brothers were raised in Tulsa, Okla. and began playing together in 1967, originally under the name of the Greenwood, Archer and Pine Street Band. In the early 1970s, they shortened their name to the Gap Band and began performing with Leon Russell, who produced their debut album “Magician’s Holiday.”
