No ‘green light’ for African Americans

Antelope Valley dance and yoga teacher

Marcia Owens Johnson teaches classical ballet and yoga to anyone who will let her. Until she retired from corrections recently, that meant mainly children and inmates at Lancaster State Prison.

Johnson is almost 65, and has been either dancing or teaching dance for 58 years.

“I come from a long history of dance,” said Johnson. “My forte is dance. That’s where my desire and heart have always been.”

Young Entrepreneurs program

PALMDALE, Calif.—A growing number of teens and young adults are finding it hard to find jobs and begin a life for themselves. So one woman, Brenda M. Drammeh, a community youth supporter, has taken it upon herself to help young people create their own reality by establishing their own businesses.

Through Maxine Waters’ Young Entrepreneurs program, which was established in Watts in 1990, Drammeh who is the program director takes young people throughout both the county and the country, to teach them about business.
