When it came to information pertinent to African-Americans and the communities in which we live, the average person received information from so many fragmented sources with not enough in depth coverage.
OurWeekly LA was formed in 2004 as a means to reach the affluent African-American communities of Los Angeles with in-depth coverage on issues pertaining to African-Americans and the communities in which we live.
With a readership of more than 200,000 weekly, the scope of the publication is to provide broad base coverage that is relevant to African-American readers that includes local, state, and national political and community news. In addition, the OurWeekly lifestyle sections provide in-depth coverage of art, culture, books, film, music, and entertainment news. Other sections include opinion, education, health, real estate, and classifieds.
About Natalie Cole
Natalie Cole, a 30+ year newspaper veteran is a known entity in the world of print media having spent 24 years in general market, 2 years in alternative and 8 years in niche ethnic media. In 2004 she cofounded OurWeekly newspaper, the largest distributing “audited” black owned newspaper in Southern California to which she is CEO & Publisher. In 2008 she founded the Urban Media Foundation (UMF), an after school program for inner city youth to learn journalism, media technology, professional development and entrepreneurialism. In 2009 Healthier You, a health maintenance quarterly magazine was introduced. In 2010 OurWeekly Antelope Valley a hybrid newspaper of Los Angeles and Antelope Valley content was launched. Finally, in 2011 the West Coast Expo: Business, Technology, Sustainability/Green and Health fair debuted at the L.A. Convention Center, to which she is CEO.
Natalie’s intense entrepreneurial spirit comes from her decades of knowledge and experience gained while leading revenue generating teams for the Tribune Company where she grew through the ranks to become its only Dual Director as Director of Classified Inside Sales for the LA Times and Director of Classified Sales for the Recycler newspaper. The LA Times is the largest circulation general market newspaper in California and the Recycler newspaper is the world’s largest “free ad” environment.
Natalie has been described as a tough, no-nonsense innovative and creative leader. She oversaw and managed the launch of new technology into the LA Times call center-Call Based Routing. She is the brainchild of the LA Times Kids Reading Page, in which she originally coined the name, Kid Sense. While serving as Associate Publisher of the LA Weekly, arguably the world’s largest alternative newspaper, she teamed with editorial to usher in the first magazine style alternative news look & feel which has now been duplicated across the country.
Natalie is featured as a contributing author in the book: Yes You Can! Reaching Your Potential While Achieving Greatness published in 2010. She was the lead visionary to develop the book: Million Dollar Conversation, Women Entrepreneurs Share Strategies for Mastering Business, Life, and Relationships, which published in 2011. In 2012, Natalie became a contributing author of Life Moments for Women.
Natalie serves or has served on the following boards: National Association of Women Business Owners, LA (NAWBO) and the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). She is Chairwoman of the Urban Media Foundation board and an Executive Officer of the National Newspaper Publisher Association (NNPA). She has served as Commissioner, appointed by Mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villariagosa on the Information Technology Board followed by the Community Redevelopment Agency, which is one of the four largest boards in the city of Los Angeles.
She and her work and community involvement have been celebrated and she is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements at the local, state and national levels. She was prominently featured in the inaugural issue of Who’s Who in Black Los Angeles and the inaugural issue of the National NAWBO Magazine. She has been a panelist, speaker &/or presenter at various events and conferences for over a decade including the National Association of Advertising, NNPA, Congressional Black Caucus, City of LA Women of Influence series, National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), NAWBO-LA and others.
About David Miller
As co-owner of the OurWeekly group of newspapers in Los Angeles since its inception in 2004, David Miller has developed successful sales strategies and marketing plans for the popular weekly periodical.
In addition to the flagship Los Angeles newspaper, there is now an Antelope Valley edition of the weekly and two magazines. He serves as publisher of the company’s two magazines—Healthier You Magazine, a bi-monthly high glossy healthcare magazine dedicated to the African American community and Careers and Education, a 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 informational publication.
In 2011, the company boldly defied the economic doldrums the country and the county was experiencing to launch the West Coast Expo, a three-day event that focused on business, technology, and green sustainability. It also featured segments on healthy living via food and other products. The West Expo will become the company’s signature event that will drive more than 50,000 visitors through the doors during the three day period.
As co-founder of OurWeekly, David has more than 26 years of sales experience including 18 years in management with print media outlets such as the Los Angeles Daily News, Wave Community Newspapers, LA Weekly, Los Angeles Times and the Los Angeles Examiner.
He is recognized for his success in growing company sales, profits and product turnarounds. His strategic approach to building a business is reflected in his work as Chief Operating Officer of OurWeekly and publisher of Healthier You Magazine, where his focus on sales and marketing quickly delivered impressive bottom-line results.
His turnaround capability is highlighted by his accomplishments as Director of Advertising of the Wave Community Newspapers, where he led a distressed company to record profitability through brand revitalization, sales operations, sales packaging, sales marketing and general advertising. David also had significant impact on profitability and growth at OurWeekly where he holds senior executive positions. His early focus on brand building and performance excellence has quickly brought the newspaper to prominence in the greater Los Angeles community and beyond.
David’s exceptional track record of business improvement is based on his philosophy of total enterprise engagement in change. He is known for his ability to quickly identify and diagnose sales and growth impediments that go far beyond marketing; to refine sales organizational structure, sales channels, market position as well as general advertising.
David received his MS in Journalism/Mass Communication from Iowa State University, 1986, and his BA in humanities from Voorhees College, 1984, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He is also committed to education and sponsors the David G. Miller Journalism and Mass Communication Scholarship annually for a student at his alma mater. He is an active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. David is an executive board member of the Crenshaw Chamber of Commerce and an active member of California Black Media.
David resides in Los Angeles with his wife, Paula, and their two daughters, Jade and Jahnae. The Miller family worships at Love and Live Again Ministry in Los Angeles, where as he is an active leadership member and chairman of all activities.
