Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has announced an Inside Safe operation in South Los Angeles. The operation addressed a longstanding encampment at the Gilbert Lindsay Recreation Center next to the Theresa Lindsay Senior Center. During this operation, unhoused Angelenos were brought inside and provided supportive services from the Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority (LAHSA), County of Los Angeles Department of Mental Health (DMH) and USC Street Medicine.
“Today’s Inside Safe operation at the Gilbert Lindsay Recreation Center in South Central continues our work to address the homelessness crisis, save lives and connect participants with housing and supportive services,” Bass said. “This effort brought unhoused Angelenos inside and restored this community space for children to participate in afterschool programs and recreational activities. We need to make sure that the next generation of Angelenos have access to high-quality programs that will help prepare them for a successful future.”
“As the weather starts warming up and our parks become hubs of activity, it is essential that everyone has access to these shared spaces,” said Councilmember Curren Price (Ninth District). “Our parks serve as a haven for leisure and play for families, children, and seniors. Oftentimes, they also provide refuge for our unhoused neighbors seeking a place to lay their heads. The Inside Safe operation at Gilbert Lindsay Recreation Center is a step forward in addressing the needs of our entire community with empathy and action, while revitalizing the park for the enjoyment of all.”
In 2023, tent encampments came down in every council district and thousands more Angelenos came inside than in 2022 thanks to action locking arms with the City Council, County and LAHSA. The Mayor has worked to improve services provided for unhoused Angelenos coming inside and has also been vocal about the need to make homelessness programs more cost effective as this urgent work continues.
